plot(x) fails: unexpected ... yyinput()

Does anyone recognize this problem: when I try a simple plot command:

octave:1> plot([1 2 3 2 1])
error: unexpected last match in yyinput()

This problem is new - the interpreter was working until I reinstalled
with --enable-shared flag to fix a problem I was having with mkoctfile.

Gnuplot does work - gplot works - just cant use the Matlab style
commands. This is ver 2.0.5 on Linux. Thanks -- Jeff
