a simple solution would be to make MEX files executables that would
communicate with matlab through stdin/stdout, this way there would be
no dld problems at all and it would be a lot more portable. Maybe we
could even have the same API as mex files in Matlab so that extensions
could be compiled either for matlab or octave.
