Octave uses a bison-generated parser to `compile' the input into parse
trees which are then evaluated directly.  There is no optimization

Most of this is handled in lex.l, parse.y, tree-*.h, tree-*.cc,
tc-*.h, and tc-*.cc.  The main compile-eval loop is in
