I've been reading about unix-like systems for a long time. I recently came across the HURD. In goals, it's similar to plan9; a replacement for the unix operating system. Except that plan9 wants to only replace unix. HURD wants to replace all the other stuff. I also heard it's microkernel, like minix. But is it any faster? What are the pluses of having a microkernel vs a monolothic like linux, bsd, or unix? What about a hybrid kernel like windows? Is this intended to fully replace the need for any other operating system?
