   So I'm not sure why the pings weren't doing anything, maybe

Yup, they might be filtering all ICMP packets.

   Could you explain what you meant by patching the kernel

Actually, come to think of it, I could just do such updates; it isn't
really much work.

As for applying patches:

* download the patch
* gunzip it
* read the manual for the patch program
* read whatever documentation that exists on how to compile GNU Mach
* install new kernel, and sacrifce some goats, virgins, etc...

To find documentation about the various stuff, look at:
http://hurd.gnu.org, that is a good starting point.  And google is
your friend.
