Perhaps you would like to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH before you run dpkg/apt/dselect
or make a symlink that makes the lib visible to the liker?

As for man-db I have a version that depends on db4 at
http://mactest98.ruk.cuni.cz/~hramrach/packages
libdb4.0 can be found there as well.
