I waited for 30 minutes for the next prompt before terminating with a key stroke. There must be something about the hardware that the kernel does not like, what is the next step in the boot process it might throw some light on what my problem is...

About 10 seconds, the install is on a 1.8Ghz P4 though... I will retry the install and leave it longer to see if it goes passed this point...

Thanks

I am unable to get HURD to install. I used both the J1 CD and the tar

The kernel starts booting but every time it only gets to the floppy
drive detection message, after which it just stops, when I press a key
the kernel dies with a panic statement and reboots...

How long did you wait before pressing the key? On a slow machine, it
will take a few seconds until the next message gets displayed at that
point.
