Sounds like you do not have enough ram.

You will find that the hurd will be _much_ more stable if you add swap.
Then, you will be able to get farther and help development there.
However, if you are really against swap for some reason (the hurd can page
to Linux swap BTW), then you could help by debugging the default pager.
