Starting from version 4.3, gcc uses MPFR to evaluate calls to built-in functions whose argument is a constant. http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.3/changes.html#mpfropts so you may take at least *some* of the advantages of multiple-precision without changing client or libgsl code.
