Can someone elaborate on the purpose of the gsl_wavelet_*_centered
functions?

The manual simply says:

"The centered forms of the wavelets align the coefficients of the various
sub-bands on edges. Thus the resulting visualization of the
coefficients of the wavelet transform in the phase plane is easier to
  understand."

I don't understand this. What is meant by "sub-bands", "edges" and
"phase plane" in this context?

Thanks.
