prefix isn't set

I start my grub.cfg with:
set prefix=(memdisk)/boot/grub
yet before the grub menu is shown, it briefly displays:
error: variable 'prefix' isn't set.
error: variable 'prefix' isn't set.
error: variable 'prefix' isn't set.
always 3 times.
Why is that and what can i do about it?
