Issues getting grub 2.02 in buildroot to run scripting in grub.cfg

I am trying my hardest to get rauc to work with my buildroot system, and
the recommended grub.cfg has a script that contains a few if loops. When
grub encounters these loops, it complains about not being able to find
the '[' command, which leads me to think I am missing a module of some
nature that allows this to function. Where should I look at to glean
what module I would need?
