all right, it all worked after all!
Pascal, thank you very much for your help and patience.
I think this needs to be somewhere on a wiki page - I saw many searches for
this problem, and the suggested solution is to give up grub and install
some other boot manager from sourceforge, which i did not feel comfortable
to do.
I could write something up from the user perspective which you can edit and
publish, let me know if you think this is something worth pursuing.
