Normal menu items?

This is what I have learned.  Running update-grub from Ubuntu 14.04 in sda5 
finds 14.04 kernels 3.13.0.24 and .30, memtest86, XP and Ubuntu 12.04 on sda2, 
but does not change entries in the GRUB menu.  Running the command from 12.04 
in sda2 does add both 3.13.0.24 and 3.13.0.30 to the GRUB menu.  This explains 
why 14.04 only appeared in the menu after 12.04 ran update-grub at with the 
Ubuntu upgrade from 64 to 65. After 3.13.0.24 installed from a live disk and 
the Wi-Fi was up, the upgrade to  3.13.0.30 also ran update-grub but 30 did not 
appear in the GRUB menu until update-grub had run in a terminal from 12.04 in 
sda2.  sda5 is in extended partition sda4 if that is relevant.

Answer to question 1 is yes.
Answer to question 2 is yes.  It caused no problems.
Answer to question 3 is yes.  I would be pleased to learn why.  Do I need a 
separate boot partition?

Upon installing Ubuntu 14.04 alongside 12.04 and XP, no boot menu entries 
appeared until 12.04 
upgraded to 3.2.0-65.  Then the following 3 lines appeared. 
Ubuntu' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os 
'gnulinux-simple-UUID ->
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.14.0-24-generic' --class gnu-linux --class gnu ----class 
os 'gnulinux-3.13.0-24-ge->
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.13.0-24-generic (recovery mode)'  --class ubuntu --class 
gnu --class os 'gnuli->

Question 1 are these normal GRUB menu items?  "UUID" replaces the real string.  
All lines were wider 
than my screen.  They did all boot the same OS until I messed up the video.

Question 2 Can I wipe the partition and re-install 14.04 without confusing 
GRUB?uestion 3 Does grub-update need to be run in the 12.04 partition to add 
the menu items for 14.04?

Question 4 Irrelevant to the above but I wish to adjust my thinking to the 
proper view.
