The 1.99 version is a pre-release of GRUB2, and is quite old despite the Debian
specific patches applied on top of it as implied by -27.

If no one else comes up with ideas, I'd say file a bug with your distro but
then also build from current grub git source, and see if the problem is
reproducible there.
