Thanks :) Ahh, i meant the secure boot had been enabled and that's what i switched off in order to be able to boot from Cd/Usb and having it off seemed to prevent Win8 from booting.
I got an off-list answer that also suggested it was fairly easy

I suspect most of that link might work with pretty much any distro with just a bit of simple figuring out but since it is Ubuntu that i am trying to get onto that laptop the link is perfect!

All modern Linux distributions support UEFI. I would
be very surprised if you could not boot Linux because of it. But system with Windows 8 likely also supports and has enabled UEFI secure boot. Which can prevent booting from removable media (there are reports about it).
Check whether secure boot is enabled and whether it is possible to disable it.

That is more question for Windows support forums - is it possible to
boot Windows on legacy BIOS if it was installed on UEFI? If yes, grub2
will be able to boot it.
