Well, that looks normal (no recordfail), which suggests that
recordfail is not the problem. Can you confirm that at boot you now
see GRUB 1.99-21ubuntu* as the version at boot, and that the grub menu
still doesn't timeout (be sure to confirm that the grub environment
block is "empty" as it is now before you reboot)?
