md boot failure

I'm trying to copy an existing system on a new md array. But I can't get 
the system to boot off the new disks. Ubuntu Natty. I have Kubuntu CD, I 
boot off that, reinstall mdadm, then:

> sudo -i
> mdadm --assemble /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1
> mdadm --assemble /dev/md1 /dev/sda5 /dev/sdb5
> mdadm --assemble /dev/md2 /dev/sda6 /dev/sdb6
> mdadm --assemble /dev/md3 /dev/sda7 /dev/sdb7
> mkdir /md0
> mount /dev/md0 /md0
> mount /dev/md1 /md0/var
> mount /dev/md3 /md0/home
> mount -o bind /dev /md0/dev
> mount -t proc  none /md0/proc
> mount -t sysfs none /md0/sys
> chroot /md0

Then try to reinstall grub

#aptitude reinstall grub-pc :

I've been trying to get the new system to boot for ages, but keep 
failing to do that, and I don't know where to go from here. Can someone 
assist?
