Fink's package of libtasn1 is getting a bit long in the tooth (version 0.3.9), so I figured I'd look into modernizing it. Attempting to build
version 1.2, I get:

Please try libtasn1 1.8 or 2.0 instead.

oops. It was 2.0. Looking at the wrong list when writing the email.

one of the libtool experts from fink told me that OS X will not allow
creation of an empty archive. He suspected a gnulib bug, or a problem
with the way gnulib is being used.

Mac OS X 10.5.6, gcc 4.0.1 (Apple's), libtool 2.2.6 or 1.5.26

Suggestions?
