They have different filenames, libdb-3.2.so for example.
Distributions usually symlink the newest version. On my machine 
/usr/lib/libdb.so is a link to /usr/lib/libdb3.so.3

That's odd. Is the error message really the same? Are there any other 
BDB 1.x "db.h"s in your path?
