I hope this hasn't been asked before. I vaguely remember some recent questions about compile problems. I just lost my job yesterday, so I'm not thinking real clearly right now.

I haven't been able to compile some later versions of lilypond. The errors I get are:

make[1]: Entering directory `/home/jim/music/lilypond/lilypond-1.3.88/lily'

....

all-font-metrics.cc:56: `kpse_afm_format' undeclared (first use this function)

It seems that you don't have the Kpathsea library correctly
installed, see INSTALL.txt.
The strange thing is that it should use an alternative
implementation if configure didn't find the library.
What did configure say about kpathsea?
<snip>

configure says:

checking for kpathsea/kpathsea.h... no

Note: my kpathsea.h is in

/usr/local/include/kpathsea/kpathsea.h
