Have you tried (show-paren-mode -1)? The function help (24.3 here, not 22.x) says, "enable Show Paren mode if ARG is positive, and disable it otherwise." Not sure whether ELisp considers 0 a positive number or not, or how it might classify nil, but maybe give that a try... Skip
