I'm just going on a hunch here, but I have the following in my .zshrc:
GPG_TTY=$(tty)
export GPG_TTY
Maybe that is necessary?
I also recall some confusion about the move from gpg1 to gpg2 and
pinentry... but I can't remember what it was about.
