On Mac OS X 10.6.8, Snow Leopard, I cannot reproduce this. The bsdtar archive I
created can be opened with /usr/bin/emacs -Q. What's puzzling is that bsdtar
includes the metadata resource forks of regular files into the archive, as in:
-rw-r--r-- 501/80 452 ./._vishnusmriti.txt
-rw-r--r-- 501/80 402641 vishnusmriti.txt
-rwxr-xr-x 501/80 323 emacs.sh
-rw-r--r-- 501/80 10913 dot-emacs
-rw-r--r-- 501/80 478 ./._test-vertical.tex
-rw-r--r-- 501/80 268 test-vertical.tex
-rw-r--r-- 501/80 477 ./._ThreeKingdomsCh1.tex.zip
-rw-r--r-- 501/80 9639 ThreeKingdomsCh1.tex.zip
What I cannot open successfully is the ZIP archive inside the bsdtar archive.
For help give more details! How did you create the bsdtar archive? What was the
command line? How did you launch GNU Emacs? Did you try it with -Q, i.e.,
without any customisation? What is your Mac OS X version? Which version of GNU
Emacs are you using?
