There are GNU Emacs variants that run natively in Aqua, the Mac OS X windowing
system. Without X11.
Mac OS X also offers to easily switch the keyboard layout from a menu in the
menu bar (when enabled from System Preferences). It's possible to modify and
save an existing keyboard layout with
http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&id=ukelele and then
use this layout. The disadvantage is: /all/ applications receive these modified
key events. (And a vivid user community exists.)
