I want to be sure I understand: Do you mean that, after inserting the
text property and scrolling, you see:
| test test test
and not:
|test test test
That would very much surprise me, as does:

What operating system are you running Emacs on? (Mine is
i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.6)
