For me, cvs-status DOES show Unknown files:
Up-To-Date 1.1 .cvsignore
Up-To-Date 1.10 INSTALL
Up-To-Date 1.16 README
Up-To-Date 1.5 TODO
Unknown changes
This is Gnu Emacs 21.2.1, if that matters.
