ftp write protect question

Hi Everyone,

I am new to emacs/xemacs.
When I use edit a file in emacs located in a remote linux machine using
ange-ftp. Even if I am the owner of the file, the file opens up as write
protected. The only way I can prevent this from happening is I manually give
write permission to the group using chmod 664.
(I ftp using the owner ID. )
This is looks quite strange to me.
