Hi,
you can find some documentation with the code. If you are interested in
more program details, there are lots of publications at:

Take a look at those between 1998 and 2002.
A longer one is:

Gift works well on Suse and Debian but does not give too much trouble on
RedHat and Mandrake.
There are also books on visual information retrieval by Alberto del
