How does gawk allocate memory for arrays?

I do not know the answer to Ed's question. The words 'an order of magnitude
faster' brought to mind OS issues such as paging that I encountered long
ago when I wrote a program to allocate a huge chunk of ram up front. So my
(minor) followup question is, after knowing 'how', is there one size or OS
specific build sizes used for any 'default size' that gets allocated
initially and one size or OS specific sizes of any 'new chunks' of memory.
