That is very old. Probably without the new font-backend, which Kenichi's
instructions probably assume. Try finding a newer version. If you cannot
compile Emacs yourself from CVS, the version at the following URL is
kept reasonably up to date (though some versions there are slightly
modified so may have different bugs).
