Yes it does, but the question is what you types after C-q?  To insert
a literal newline, you need to type C-q C-j, as shows above.


No, unfortunately in my emacs it does not. I press C-q (i get beep and message 'Beginning of buffer') and with C-j query-replace command is immediately started.
I don't have a chance to finish the command...
