I couldn't imagine that someone who uses GNU Emacs doesn't know what
is GNU.  Sorry.

I am sure this a reasonable assumption, and possibly reflects why I, and I am sure other Windows refugees have  problems when trying to use programs like Emacs that have originated in the Unix world

You should get the Coreutils package.  Sorry, I was under an
impression you already had ls.exe, since you replied on gnu.emacs.help
to someone who suggested to get it.

No, I never got as far  as that, as I was then getting a bit confused with what I should be trying next

This part was actually described in my mail:

The "as follows" part was supposed to tell that what follows shows how
to disable ls-lisp.

Ah, I assumed this was setting up the new program rather than disabling the exisiting one.

I thought that detailed instructions could overcome that.  Obviously,
my instructions were not detailed enough.

Maybe , maybe not, its always difficult with instructions like this, when you have no real idea  about the base knowledge of the person you are helping.

I didn't perceive that as unappreciative.  I'm a little frustrated by
my evident inability to help you efficiently, but that's all.

I think this is really my fault

But that effort is to be expected, I think, when you are trying to
modify the default way of displaying dates and times.  What Windows
program lets you even do that, let alone do it ``easily''?

I am not complaining about the effort, only that  I could have more sensibly spent my time learning Emacs core skills rather than tweaking the date format. Its not that big a problem, just a bit confusing at times - however you mentioning the alignment issue made me think that I might be better off with the ISO format anyway

And as to tweaking dates in Windows, it has never been an issue as they have always used the UK format based on the regional settings

Anyway, if setting a single option via Customize is easy enough, the
next binary release should let you do that.

Thanks, that does sound some what less involved :-)

Graham
