Yes, cua-mode is very good.
The very first problem I stumbled on with Emacs was that it sometimes stole my Alt key.I've never had trouble with the Alt key on Emacs. Perhaps I expect less from my Alt key that you do from yours :-)
If you never had that then you are surely correct ;-)
