It looks like it's trying to autocomplete now... but it's just hanging. Anytime I tab now while in tramp (a tough habit to break), all of Emacs locks up and I have to kill the process.

There was a change in the autoload scenario of Tramp some weeks ago. A
consequence is, that autocompletion works only if
partial-completion-mode is enabled.
