On my setup I don't have either of these variables set. In fact I'm not really seeing a single cygwin related environment variable that is only created by running under a cygwin shell. The direction that I'm heading in right now involves another command line option to bypass the path expansion. Then an alias in bash and the problem goes away. It's not perfect, but it doesn't break anything.

Currently I'm rolling in a few changes (mostly from Lennart Borgman) and will have a new version for folks to try out fairly soon (perhaps later today).

Scratch the $CYGWIN idea, I didn't realise that it's set simply by having cygwin installed.

It's not set simply by having Cygwin installed! At least in my setup I
have to define it manually.

But maybe one of the following environment variables could be used
instead:

MACHTYPE=i686-pc-cygwin
OSTYPE=cygwin

The point would then be: Is OSTYPE defined? If so, is its value
``cygwin''? If so, assume gnuclientw.exe is being called from a Cygwin
terminal window and don't perform path expansion at all. Wouldn't it?

Cordially, Ismael
