emacs opens a file in a mode determined by the file extension.
Thus C-x C-f new.txt will open a new file in text mode. Files can be saved
with C-x C-s.
This key sequence will save without prompting for a file name because it
already has a file name.
When you open a new buffer with C-x b, it opens in fundamental mode. When you
save
a buffer not currently associated with a file you are prompted for a file name.
C-x b is normally used to switch to an already open buffer associated with a
file.
