I have a really large (roughly 400 Mb) text file to edit. When I try and load into emacs I get "maximum buffer size exceeded" or some such. What is the best way around this?(I am running this on a laptop running Windows XP, with 512 Mb ram)
First, you might try to get around this. You didn't write this file, nor will you read all
what is in there. You will probably: -search data & alter stuff -process the data in there This can be done in different ways too: -scripting languages (Tcl/Perl/Python) -shell commands (grep/sed/awk/...) See cygwin for a free windows version of command line utilities See activestate.com for a free windows version of Perl/Tcl I'm sorry I can't help you the "correct" way ;-), David
