Mine, too. I have to use a phone line to send mail (SMTP) when I'm not
at home, even if I'm in a wireless cafe where I can access the
internet (NNTP and POP). What a strange way to use gnus, which I
orignianally started using to *integrate* and *unify* NNTP, POP, and
SMTP.

When you get this to work, could you report back to the group the
following versions

    emacs
    gnus
    sendmail.el
    smtpmail.el

and any configurations you needed to do to get authentication working
over SMTP?

I would really appreciate it.
