The first few hits on a google search on the string
      "windows XP" emacs 21.3 crash

try again, as Peter Lee suggested.

Thanks to all.

Sorry?!!! Has this ever been reported to the Emacs developers, or do
people just moan about it at random places on the Net and expect it to
be magically fixed? This is the first I have heard of it.
