Hi Tom,

I like the way you think :-) Yes, I'm using Knoware's FTPNetdrive to
map a Linux server as a drive on my Windows box. And you're right, the
only reason why I do transliteration on text files is for notepad
(wordpad?) which can't handle it properly. Unfortunately, it is called
in too many places by too many apps for me to ignore.

Knoware tells me that the GetFileSize()Windows function returns the
correct file size and that somehow Emacs is doing something different to
use the remote size. They claim only emacs has this problem...

Thanks again for your response and for all who have responded...

Take care,

Actually, I think all we really need is a project to provide a
look-alike replacement for notepad.exe that is willing to display
files without CRLF (but just LF) "correctly".

My solution to the problem has been to turn off all DOSisms in
emacs and always read and write files in "unix" format. The only
windows tool I've ever found that has problems with that is notepad.
If we could just replace notepad, we could start eliminating
all the CRs in the world, and no one would notice :-).
