I haven't used hex-mode for about 3 years now, but be very careful. Unless
it has been improved immeasureably, it has many "gotchas" when it comes to
actual editing hex (as opposed to just viewing hex) - it looks like a mode
somebody put it together to look at hex files but never actually got working
correctly when you want to really "edit" them (which I did at the time I
used it - I was creating unit test cases for some code and it required some
heavy hex editing of the input files).

So be warned it is best for looking, some small amount of "touching", but if
you want some heavy duty changes to your hex files then you'll have to do it
the hard way! i.e. one example I can think of is a simple case - inserting a
hex code (as opposed to overwiting) - you couldn't unless you switched out
of hex-mode and then inserted a single character and switch back to do the
hex overwrite of that character to the code you wanted - and I think from
memory even that had problems.

Sorry for the ramble, just be careful with it :-)
Peter
