[h-e-w] Printing with V21.2

I have been printing without a problem on emacs-20.7, but I just
installed 21.2, and now printing doesn't work any more.  The printer I
use is a H-P Laserjet 4000 (postscript), accessed through a print
server on the network.  The network designation is
\\Mercury\EG4000TN-1.  The result of ps-print-buffer is:

Formatting...  0%
Loading ps-mule (source)...done
ps-generate-header-line: Autoloading failed to define function 
ps-mule-encode-header-string

The relevant section of my .emacs is:

;; Printing to the postscript printer
(setq ps-printer-name "\\\\Mercury\\EG4000TN-1"); The printer name
;;

The print-buffer command works fine.

Any suggestions?
