I've used 20.3+ and 21.1, on NT and 2000, and I get these lockups
occasionally. I use gnuserv, but I never associated it with the
problem, as I don't often start new files via it during the course of
a session. I remember disabling gnuserv at one point to diagnose some
problem (maybe even this one), and I don't recall it having had an
affect on the lock-ups. But I don't know that I was paying attention
to that, either.

I do, however, associate it with my CD software! I eventually noticed
that the lockups only occur when both Emacs AND the CD player was
running. I think at the time I did some testing, and it was any CD
player, not just the one I was using (QCD is my preferred player, and
I think I tested with WinAmp and the Windows one). I'm pretty sure
the CD player is the main culprit, and Emacs is just a trigger. If I
exit the CD player before inserting a new CD, I generally don't
experience the lock-up, but if I don't, I will. It's often a gradual
lock-up, too, starting with the CD player and then Emacs, and then the
entire system.

All of this is pure speculation and is based on a couple of years of
observation and empirical evidence only. If I could reproduce it, I'd
have reported it long ago.
