Expanding briefly on what Jason wrote above, it is entirely possible to
use Cygwin programs without running a Cygwin shell, provided the path is
set appropriately. I often run Cygwin programs in an MS-DOS window
(outside Emacs) and I run Cygwin diff, grep etc. from Emacs, although my
*shell*, *texshell* etc. buffers all run the default MS-DOS command
interpreter.
