It was, as identified below, caused by the temp directory path containing
spaces
(although I don't understand how it ever did work for me, unless I'm having
flashbacks). I just created c:\temp and changed the TEMP environment
variable to
point there. Thanks for your help.

I bet you're running Windows 2000 or above!
Someone at Redmond decided to hide the TEMP directory in some obsure
directory structure AND have it include spaces (will they ever learn) ;-)
