I do not see a relationship with transient-mark-mode, but perhaps
there is another way to achieve what you want:
- Having the point (cursor) where you want to return back later type
C-space to set the mark.
- travel around as you like
- to return back type C-u C-space (once or even more if
necessary). This lets you walk back in a list of saved
positions. Every mark you set will be appended to this list (and
some other points too I think), and every C-u C-space lets you jump
one position back in the list.
I found this some months ago and use it very frequently now.
