Add this to your .emacs:

(add-hook 'shell-mode-hook (lambda () (rename-uniquely)))

each shell will be uniquely numbered then .......I add this to
mail-setup-hook also, to give me multiple mail buffers for sending mail....

You can simply rename the first shell (M-x rename-buffer : *shell_1* for
example ) and then M-x shell to start a new shell.
But there may be better methods unknown to me...
