I thinks that this solves a different problem from the one I have.
The problem Robert solved invloves font encoding.

My problem is that the wrong font is used for rendering (i.e. the font
displayed in the Sample window of the font dialoge and the font emacs
subsequently uses are not the same.)  In addition, the font properties
seems to we way off.  (i.e. it seems like Emacs is using the
properties of one font and drawing with another.)

But anyway, thanks for forwarding Roberts article.
