        Thanks for your reply. Both catdoc.exe and catdoc.el seem good; the
catdoc.el sounds more natural in the Emacs context. BUT I could not find
either of them on my machines. Do you happens to know where I can download
them? Thanks.

You can use catdoc.exe to cat out the text of a Word document.
There is also a catdoc.el which allows you to do all of the cat'n
and then subsequent editing from within Emacs.
